3 Natural Ingredients You Can Use to Make Soap

New soap makers are often surprised by how few ingredients "real" soap actually requires. At its core, soap making comes down to three things.

1. Oils and butters

This is where the character of your bar comes from. Different oils bring different properties:

  • Olive oil — gentle, conditioning, produces a mild, long-lasting bar (the base of traditional Castile soap)
  • Coconut oil — big, bubbly lather and a harder bar, but can be drying at high percentages
  • Shea or cocoa butter — adds richness and a creamy, moisturizing quality
  • Herb-infused oils — oils slowly infused with herbs like calendula, chamomile, or lavender to draw out plant benefits before they even go into the pot

Most recipes blend several oils to balance lather, hardness, and moisturizing feel.

2. Lye (sodium hydroxide)

Lye is the ingredient that actually turns oil into soap through a chemical reaction called saponification. It sounds intimidating, but it's fully consumed during the process — a properly cured bar contains no lye by the time it's ready to use. (If you're nervous about this step, our Tools & Supplies page covers the basic safety gear that makes it simple.)

3. Water (or another liquid)

Water dissolves the lye so it can be evenly distributed through the oils. Some soap makers swap in other liquids for extra benefits — goat milk, herbal tea, or aloe juice are popular choices that add mildness or specific skin benefits.

Everything else is a bonus, not a requirement

Fragrance, color, exfoliants, and add-ins (like oatmeal or clay) all make a bar more interesting — but they're optional. The magic of soap making is that just three ingredients, combined correctly, create a completely different product than what you started with.

Getting the ratios right is the part that takes practice — too much lye and a bar is harsh, too little and it stays soft and greasy. That's exactly why we built the EarthWise Soap Makers Club: every month you get a fully tested recipe (with exact oil-to-lye ratios already calculated) and a video walkthrough so your first batch turns out right.
